Have you ever had that feeling like a dream was going to come to life. It's crazy, like you're falling off a huge building and you suddenly wake up just before you hit the pavement, and you find yourself falling in to your pillows at mock speeds, It's a good think you're bed was there to soften the fall off of a forty story building.
Last night i had a dream like that, but it was a dream that I would never hope to happen. I'm a ski patroller. I submit people who have injured themselves to first aid. My dream consisted of me, and one other person. This person is some one who I am close friends with.
It all started with me joking around in the hut with some other patrollers, just a few guys laughing at people having' a hard time getting off the lift, or a joke someone told about a midget in the forest. All was going as planned, time was passing no calls were made, so no one was hurt yet. A call comes over the radio, someone has hurt them selves. I answer quick, the adrenaline pumping in my body and i put my helmet on and strap my board to my feet. I head down the run, a few people slowly making their way, having the time of their life. I ski up to the site where dispatch has told me to go, to a group of 20-30 people standing there, not sure what to do. I cut my way through the crowd waiting to see someone with a minor injury, maybe a broken arm, or some spinal injury. My friend, we will call her Samantha, has gone face first and is currently hugging a tree.
The fact that she was hugging a tree is a small problem in this story, it could only relate to some broken ribs, internal bleeding, and probably a popped lung. Though this scene is special, not a normal scenario like described before, this scene has a branch plunging through the depths of Samantha's chest. First second I didn't know what to think but I snapped into my role and I made the right calls; code III (life threatening injury), call for EMS (emergency medical service), and all the right equipment we would need to get her off of that tree, a saw, back board, and a snowmobile to get her the hell out. The dream skips, and I am at the front door of her house, getting her kids to the neighbours so I can tell her husband, that she is on her way to the hospital and it isn't looking good.
THAT WOULD BE CRAZY! It was only a dream, but a dream that felt real. I can only hope that a dream like this will never be a reality for me. But i guess the reality is, this could be a reality for me, whether I know the person or not I could find someone in the last dire minutes of their life, trying to hold on to what is left.
